THE AUTUMN AND WINTER LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS BY SESSHU TOYO WERE MY MAIN INSPIRATIONS FOR THIS SCULPTURE. I WANTED TO CAPTURE THE SIMPLICITY AND SUBDUEDNESS OF THE SUMI-E INK WASH PAINTING TECHNIQUE BY LEAVING MY WORK UNCOLORED AND FOCUSING ON THE INTRICATE CUT-OUT DETAILS. THESE INCLUDE TREES, ROOTS, FLOATING CLOUDS, HUMAN FORMS, BIRDS, HUTS, ALL CUT FROM SHEETS OF PAPER THAT RESEMBLE NATURAL ROCK FORMATIONS, AND WHEN PIECED TOGETHER, FORM A DETAILED MOUNTAIN.
IN THE CREATION OF THESE NON-REPRESENTATIONAL SCULPTURES, MY INTENTION WAS TO UTILIZE A VARIETY OF MATERIALS SUCH AS WOOD, WIRE, YARN, AND TAPE, TO DEMONSTRATE VARIOUS PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN.
"NUKLEUS" CREATES NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE SPACE THROUGH ITS KNOTTED-YARN PIECES THAT OVERLAP AND HANG ALONG THE HOLLOW STRUCTURE.
"MATADOR" USES FORM, COLOR, AND EMPHASIS, TO CREATE A SENSE OF VISUAL WEIGHT. THE DARK MASS OF JUMBLED WIRES AND THE HORN-LIKE APPENDAGES STAND AS THE FOCAL POINT OF THIS PIECE.
"TAKE-OFF" INCORPORATES SHARPLY-ANGLED SHAPES AND FORMS TO CREATE TRIANGULAR REPETITION, ESPECIALLY EVIDENT IN THE WOODEN, PROJECTILE-LIKE STRUCTURE AND IT'S TIGHTLY STRUNG WIRES WHICH MEET AT THE TIP.
AS THE TITLE SUGGESTS, WORKING ON THIS COLLECTION GAVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIMENT WITH A MULTITUDE OF MATERIALS, RESULTING IN INNOVATIVE AND EXPLORATIVE STRUCTURES/OBJECTS WHILE MAINTAINING OVERALL COHESIVENESS.
